THIS IS A LIST OF PAST NEW YEAR'S GREETINGS

Web browser readable, with explanations.

Moebius stripe (as in 1993, and an updated calendar on it)

This should be a picture of a 3D object. This should be the Moebius stripe and a calendar of years 2013 and 2014 printed on it.

This year I send my last New Year greeting as a semi-graphic object. In nineties (at least in post-communist Czech Republic) the characters as output on computer screen or printer were quite common. Twenty years later this type of output is rare, even though some computer outputs exist solely in the character format. (Otherwise graphic grouping of characters has been replaced by smileys, or emoticons. :-) Semi-graphic texts (or ASCII art) practically disappeared. My next New Year greetings shall be different, we shall see some of them hopefully next New year eve.

Dice code, 9 bit

This is a table showing a 9 bit code. This code is similar to the Braille code. Braille uses only 6 dots, it is a 6 bit code. This 9 bit code is similar, it mimics the dice game numbers (or also dominoes). It starts with encoding of all the decimal numbers from 0 to 9 and the rest follows naturally. In past, I typed in these ASCII pictures three letter currency codes (2009), algebraic chess notation codes (2003) and airport codes (2001), see below. This New Year greeting 2011 is just another example of my fascination with all sorts of codes.

From left to right: eardrum, hammer, anvil and stirrup (or, as they taught us in medical Latin: malleus, incus and stapes) and the spiral of cochlea. Based on random browsing through sites of ASCII artist it seems that none of them thought about those objects yet...

Euro versus world

On the January the 1st of 2009 is abolished the currency of the Slovak Republic (Slovak crown, SKK) and this currency is succeeded by euro (EUR). The picture shows a soccer field. On the left side plays the Euro team, consisting of the twelve original members of the currency union team. The new currency, SKK, holds the ball. On the left substitutes bench sit francs of Luxembourg and Belgium and pounds of Malta and Cyprus. On the right side plays the world team, backed up by some Asian currencies in defense and golly. On the right side substitutes bench sit small European crowns, the Estonian, Danish, Norwegian, including the Czech one. The display is not perfect, for example the Slovenian tolar (SIT), already an EURo member, plays the world side. The semi-graphic frame is borrowed from the screen of an ASCII soccer computer game.

Do not mistake Schengen and Shanghai

On the January the 1st of 2008 are abolished border checkups at some European Union borders. Spider hanging from a web

In folklore of many nations, spider is symbol of a good luck, perhaps because its web serves to catch the wealth. Also spider itself is harmless for men. Pour feliciter 2007, which means that this is for a good luck in the new year!

Anyway, this year's semi-graphic drawing is not an original art by myself. After I figured out what I want to show this year, I absentmindedly wandered on the Web, typed the keywords "spider, web, ascii, art, ...," or something like that into the search engine command line and surprisingly I found the art objects, ready to copy and paste. Then I merely repositioned these two ready made pieces of art (web + spider) and copied the text to empty spaces. The credit for the original drawings should go to: http://www.chris.com/ascii/index.html, and/or to http://www.asciiartfarts.com/. Afterwards I found accidentally that you can also reach them when following a link to the "ASCII Ribbon Campaign". This was an interesting signature file in one e-mail, see below.

Siderodromophilia (=A joy of riding in trains.)

This word was supposedly created by Sigmund Freud (as the legend goes). I only add that in my basic understanding of the word this means nothing sexual at all - simply enjoying a train ride, as you read it. Last year I enjoyed more train rides then ever, and I will enjoy some more next year. Happy new year!

Christmas tree

I noticed that numbers written as 5^2^n (in words: as powers of five up to the powers of two up to the n) end with the same group of digits. What concerns the proof, I guess that somebody will sure tell me something like: The proof is rather elementary, dear Dr. Watson...

European bridges

This one is rather an abstract drawing. These should be the bridges which are on all the bank notes of the new EUR-opean currency. Should the real historical bridges hold the old Europe together.

Pataphysical and Gregorian calendars

Pataphysical calendar was described by A. Jarry in The annals of pataphysics. It refers back to a simpler calendar before the Julian and the Gregorian days. Briefly: it has 13 months, all 28 days long, and this way all the 13th-s are Fridays. 13*28=364 days, and the remining day, New Year's eve, is also Friday the 13th. Curiously, with addition of leap years with leap days, and leap days at the beginning and at the end of the year, all of them being Fridays the 13th, of course, the pataphysical calendar can be kept in synchrony with the regular (Gregorian) calendar in use even up to the day of the week. The New Year's card shows couple of weeks in the year 2002 in both of these calendars.

Airports of the globe

This should be a view of the globe, with various airports scattered around. Airports are coded by three letter acronyms. I just give three examples of my most frequented airports: BWI is Baltimore-Washington Inernational, BUR is Burbank, California and PRG is Prague, Czech Republic; and so on. When I played with this drawing, flying was so easy. I hope that such attack, like that in the September 11, 2001, will never happen again.

Millennium bug

This is yet another millennium theme. This should be a drawing of a new VW Beetle arriving to the new millennium, surrounded by small Y2K bugs.

Our home computer, where I typed this New Year's card, model of 1993, still has a Y2K bug in its MS DOS. I was sending this New Year's card via an ELM mailer program, with a Y2K bug in it. Neither DOS, nor UNIX world were immune against this aging syndrome. On the other hand, all the vital computer services, airports and atm-s and so on were running just fine.

Millennium dashboard

This should be a look at a dashboard of all the mobile mankind, hurrying up with low gas, low battery, high temperature and high speed. One sometimes looks at the dashboard and sees couple of nines. We saw just three of them in the 1999.

Semi-regular poly-hedron means, that all edges are of the same length, but not all faces are of the same shape. This poly-hedron consists of faces of two types: squares and triangles.
