The final state exam consists of two parts - the first one is the defense of the master's thesis and the second one is the oral part. Both parts usually take place within the same day - the defense is followed by the oral part.

Evaluation of the final exam

The final exam is evaluated by three grades - one for the thesis, one for the oral part and one as the overall result. The grading is the same as for the standard exams: 1=excellent, 2=very good, 3=good, 4=fail. In case the student successfully passes the final exam, his/her study is successfully completed and the final result of his/her study is determined (graduated or graduated with awards).

Evaluation of the thesis

The grade for the thesis is determined by the Board at the closed session following the defences. The Boards takes in account suggestions of the supervisor and the referee, the way of presenting the content, replies to remarks and to questions. The final decision is taken by voting.

Evaluation of the oral part

The examinators evaluate the individiual examinations by auxilliary partial grades. The Board then determines the grade for the oral part at a closed session with the use of the partial grades. The resulting grade is not the average of the partial grades, but a result of discussion and voting of the Board. The auxilliary partial grades serve only as tool for deciding of the Board, they are not a part of the official results - even though they are usually revealed to students in order they understand better the evaluation.

Overall grade of the final exam

With the use of the grades of the thesis and of the oral part the Board detetermines the overall grade of the final exam. There are two cases when this decision is algorithmic - if the grades of both parts coincide, the overall grade is also the same, and in case at least one of the parts is evaluated by grade 4 (fail), the overall grade is 4 (fail) as well. (The second case is quite rare at our Board, but it happens from time to time.)

Otherwise the Board tries to evaluate in more detail the performance of the student at both parts of the exam and then determines the overall grade within the closed interval whose endpoints are grades of the two parts.
